How splits actually work
Every song has two copyrights: the composition (the writing — melody, lyrics, chords) and the master (the recording itself). Writers split the composition; artists, producers and whoever funded the recording split the master. Run this calculator once for each side — the percentages are usually different.
Ground rules that save friendships
- Agree on splits in the session, the day the song is made — before anyone knows if it's a hit.
- Put it in writing (even a group text counts as evidence; a split sheet is better).
- Producer points on the master typically run 2–5% of the artist's share, or a flat fee plus points.
- If everyone contributed and nobody can agree, equal splits are the industry-standard default.
FAQ
Do splits have to be equal?
No — they're whatever the collaborators agree to. Equal splits are just the default when nothing is negotiated.
Is this calculator legal advice?
No. It does the arithmetic; the agreement between collaborators is the legal part. For serious money, get a split sheet signed and talk to a music attorney.
